What Is The Best Mattress Topper For An RV?

RV mattresses that are included with your RV are not known for their comfort.

And I’m sure you agree with me when I say, “A good night’s sleep when your camping is really important.”

Even more important if you live full-time in an RV like we did for a few years.

There are a lot of mattress pads from which to choose, but not all are suitable for an RV king or RV queen.

Your sleeping position will also dictate the type of topper you purchase.

Sometimes shopping for new mattresses for your RV instead of toppers is the best option.

But a topper will usually solve your problem without breaking into your travel budget too much.

Measure RV Bed Twice And Order Once

Most RV mattresses are not a custom size. They’re usually a shorter version of a king or queen size.

Although I’ve heard Airstreams have special size mattresses. If you have one, you’ll know.

On the other hand, RV bunk beds can come in an assortment of custom sizes.

In fact, we had a couple thicker toppers custom cut to fit the bunks in our travel trailer.

It improved the sleeping experience for our kids (a lot), which made me a happier camper!

You RV owners with kids know what I mean.

Regardless, before you hit order on any soft mattress topper, measure twice to make sure it’s the right size.

If the topper states “king or queen size,” then use the standard measurement of each to compare to your RV’s mattress.

  • King Size: 76″ X 80″

  • Queen Size: 60″ X 80″

It’s difficult to return a topper once it’s out of the box and “decompressed.”

Do You Need A Cover For The Mattress Topper?

Personally, I think adding a cover to your topper is an excellent choice.

It makes it easier to keep your mattress topper clean.

Remove it on occasion and toss it in the wash.

End of story.

Types Of Mattress Toppers

There are several different types of mattress toppers made from different materials.

  • Latex topper: I suggest considering naturally sourced latex, which may do a better job at preventing mold or mildew.

  • Gel memory foam topper: This is made by mixing liquid gel into the foam during production.
It’s touted as a mattress that won’t trap heat.

  • High-density memory foam: Memory foam is now a common material used for mattresses. And for good reason.
It does a great job and won’t break the bank. That translates into a great return on investment.
This is the type of mattress we bought for our campervan.

  • Polyurethane foam: This is very inexpensive to produce, but may off-gas harmful substances.
It’s best not to skimp on your mattress topper and compromise a comfortable sleep.

Let’s get to the point and help you make the best decision about which mattress toppers are best suited for recreational vehicles.

The Best RV Mattress Topper (The List)

Our mattress topper gets stored behind the backseat when traveling.

If your mattress remains stationary, a thick mattress topper will be fine and a great choice.

But I suggest a maximum of two inches thick if you have to roll or fold your topper for storage during transport such as those with camper vans.

Also, a topper that’s only one inch thick will do very little to improve the current mattress in your RV.

The selection below is based on fit, material and customer reviews.

  • Linenspa 2 Inch Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper

This is the mattress topper we ordered for our Roadtrek’s king sized bed.

We ordered the Queen size since “king size” in a campervan is somewhat of an oxymoron.

As mentioned earlier, we chose this because it can easily be stored behind the seat so the boys have a comfortable, safe place to sit during drives.

It’s VERY comfortable and offers optimal support.

It’s fine for side sleepers (like me) and back sleepers (like Rose).

I would like it more if it folded up smaller, but I realize that’s a tall order for any topper.

  • Lucid 2 Inch Mattress Topper

Another great topper with raving customer reviews that can offer a great night’s sleep in your RV.

  • Serta ThermaGel Cooling, Pressure-Relieving Memory Foam Mattress Topper

A long-time brand that might suit you if your prefer well-known brands. It will likely suit your needs just fine.

  • ZINUS 1.5 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress Topper

This topper will likely pack up the smallest if you believe you only need a little cushioning on your existing bed.

If your topper will remain stationary, consider the 3″ or 4″ topper instead.

  • SMUG Memory Foam Mattress Topper

The reviews are solid and it weighs less than 10 lbs. It might just be a great bang for the buck if you only plan on sleeping in your RV occasionally.

  • WhatsBedding 3 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper

If you’re someone who desires a really soft mattress, this might be a great solution for your RV.

It will also pack up tightly.

Wrapping Up RV Mattress Toppers

The topper is also stored away when we work in the campervan. We leave the sheet on so it’s easier.

When it comes to quality of sleep, please do yourself a favor and refrain from skimping on a mattress or mattress topper quality.

Our RV life experience was always better when we had a comfortable nights sleep.

Consider the dimensions of your RV bed first, then your sleeping positions and finally the type of material you’re comfortable with in a topper.

Then measure your RV’s bed twice and order the right topper once.

I covered the best mattress for your campervan in this article, which is also relevant for most RV’s.
