The road is passable by a standard passenger car, but I recommend a vehicle or camper with higher clearance to get into some of the designated spots.

It will broaden your selection of places to park your rig. Many of the spots have some gnarly tire ruts from the rains.

There are several spots that will accommodate large motor homes and fifth wheels.

A word of caution. If it’s been raining, avoid this area. The type of mud that forms wreaks havoc for most rigs and 4×4’s.

In our ignorance, we almost slid right into the side of our trailer when returning from town.

Yes, but the selection of designated spots is limited for larger rigs.

Most Class C’s, fifth wheels and travel trailers will be fine especially if you have higher clearance.

Almost any campervan will be fine and will have ample camping spots from which to choose.

The end of McCoy Flts Rd offers plenty of ways to turn a big rig around.

    Dispersed camping near Vernal, UT

There were only a few other rigs there the whole time we were there. In other words, we never had neighbors close to us.

In fact we were able to plink with our .22’s and pellet guns since we were surrounded with berms.

Yes, we clean up our brass (and a lot of other peoples too).

Absolutely. At no point did we feel we were surrounded by shady or suspicious characters.

Again, a word of caution about any mud if it’s been raining. If you have to leave on a particular day and there’s rain in the forecast, plan accordingly.

There’s no way we could have towed out even in a mild rain.

McCoy Flats left us with some of our favorite memories.

We fell in love with the town of Vernal and took advantage of some great hiking and state parks close by town.

There are also a few great restaurants in town that will offer an excellent meal and service. One thing we noticed about the town of Vernal; everyone was so friendly.

Several of our hikes (Moonshine Arch and Dinosaur Trackway) are featured on our other blog, hikerspack.com.

If your objective is to visit Dinosaur National Monument or just find a delightful town, McCoy Flats is a great place to boondock!

    Just watch the mud!
