We chose this site because Cinder Hills OHV was closed due to the tunnel fires.

It was a great choice!

  9. Road Conditions In And Out Forest Road 128
  10.
The main road is passable by any type of vehicle without issues.

The hairpin turn circled in the photo is really tight, but it’s widened enough that any size vehicle can make the turn.

The roads off the main road into the dispersed site are pretty rough and limited to smaller rigs with high ground clearance.

If you stay close to Forest Road 128, you should be fine.

  11. Is Forest Road 128 Big Rig Friendly?
  12.
After exploring, we only noticed three or four spots viable for really big rigs toward the front of FR 128.

The closer you get to the “dried up” Marshall Lake, the more spots you’ll see that can accommodate large rigs right off the road.

If you have a big rig, I would consider making this location a “plan B or C” for you since all of the spots were taken for the entire duration of our stay.

The road offers plenty of options to turn around if you don’t find a spot. It also forms a loop if you feel like driving all the way around.

  13. Cell Strength & Carriers Around Marshall Lake
  14.
All carriers are well represented in this area. We had fast and strong data from T-Mobile the whole stay.

The Open Signal app showed a strong signal from all carriers in this area.

  15. Starlink Friendly Sky View?
  16.
Almost all the spots are surrounded by trees, so you will not have a clear view of the horizon.

I would not count on Starlink as an option. But since the cellular coverage is so strong, you should be fine with a hot spot or similar system.

  17. Crowds Around Forest Road 128
  18.
It was busy. It seemed like a popular destination for van life individuals.

In fact, a good van with high clearance will have a ton of options to choose from.

There’s a lot of traffic coming and going to the “dried up” Marshall’s Lake, but no one bothered us.

Everyone we encountered, was super friendly.

  25. Interpretation And Review Of Dispersed Camping Off FR 128
  26.
We really liked this location. It’s one of the more peaceful and tranquil locations in our arsenal of Arizona boondocking locations.

Flagstaff is a favorite destination for us and this location offers a pleasant drive through NAU’s campus.

Whether you just soak in the tranquility of this area or use it to explore Flagstaff, you’ll find it very accommodating to your needs.

We would return here again and again!
