What Is The Best Campervan Mattress?

The best campervan mattress for a good night’s sleep depends on three criteria:

  1. Your preference for mattress firmness.
  2.

  3. The amount of time you plan to stay in your campervan.
  4.

  5. Whether or not your bed can stay made or needs to be transformed into a living area daily.

Once you address the above criteria, you can shop for the right mattress for your van life.

Before we lived full-time in an RV, I would have expressed that the perfect mattress for an RV doesn’t exist.

Rose proved me wrong with her meticulous research for the best RV mattress that was a short queen.

It was so good, that we bought the same mattress for our home base (standard mattress sizes of course).

That speaks volumes if you ask me.

She did it again with our campervan!

Regardless of where you’re sleeping, the importance of quality sleep can’t be understated.

Seriously, a few bad nights of sleep while camping in your van will eliminate all the pleasure that should come from the van life.

So make it a priority!

If you want to learn more, dive into Matthew Wlaker’s book, Why We Sleep.

It changed my life! I digress.

Onward!

Does Your Campervan Even Need A New Mattress?

Our cushions were not bad and only needed a topper.

Make sure you have your new campervan in your possession before shopping for RV mattresses.

  1. First of all, you may find the mattress or setup included to be just fine, saving you time and money.

So far, in all of our time living in and touring RVs, only one OEM mattress was perfect.

It was in a Storyteller Overland campervan.
  2.

  3. Second, there are so many different setups in campervan, that you’ll have to do a lot of measuring and brainstorming before shopping.

When it comes to RV mattresses, there are a lot of different sizes and standard sizes do not typically apply.

That does not apply to large fifth wheels, class A, or super C motorhomes.

You might also find that the perfect mattress will require some cutting and shaping to work in your campervan.

Consider yourself lucky if it turns out to be a simple process.

Your Type Of Mattress For Campervan

Regardless of your mattress preference, you’ll likely not find innerspring mattresses to be a viable option in a campervan.

You might also find that you don’t need a new mattress. Instead, a new top layer may work fine.

A memory foam topper costs less and can be packed away more conveniently.

Ultimately, that was our solution for our Roadtrek Zion campervan.

If you leave your bed set up all the time and it doesn’t obstruct storage, you can shop for ” more inches” of memory foam mattresses that will offer superior comfort.

Are You Full Time, Part Time, Or Do You Just Take Road Trips?

The amount of research and money you spend should correlate with the amount of time you plan on sleeping in the van.

We made zero compromises when we were full-time since we value quality sleep quality so much.

But we’re only part-time in the campervan. So flexibility of space became a priority.

If you just take road trips, a thinner mattress that stores away easily in your new camper is a great option.

You’ll find the flexible space to be more beneficial than the perfect mattress.

Does Your Bed Frame Stay In Place Or Transform?

The boys need seats for the journey!

As mentioned above, if you need the space where your bed resides for dining or working, you can only look at mattress options that pack away easily.

I realize that’s stating the obvious, but if you’re new to the van life, it’s an important point.

Of course, if you don’t need the flexible space, a more supportive mattress that remains stationary is an option.

Best Campervan Mattresses That Stay Put

If your bed remains set up, you can look at regular mattresses that are not specific to RVs.

Measure your space carefully (many times) and select a mattress that fits without alteration.

Avoid overly thick mattresses. You only have so much head room in a campervan.

This information is based on our research and experience in our previous RV as well as our current campervan.

  • ZINUS 6 Inch Green Tea Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress

This is the mattress we put in our travel trailer and loved it so much, we bought one for our home base.

We always got a great night’s sleep on this mattress and it was still functioning well when we sold the trailer.

This will also work well in a campervan. Make sure to select the appropriate size.

  •

  • Lucid 6 Inch Queen Mattress

Not to be mistaken with the car company. Lucid makes solid mattresses with great reviews.

It will only add 29 lbs to your campervans weight. Yes, that matters.

  • It oddly has no brand name

The reviews are great and it would be suitable in a campervan requiring a twin, queen or a king.

I couldn’t leave it off the list.

  • Novilla Queen Mattress, 6-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress

Solid reviews and it will work great as a permanent bed in a campervan.

But one caveat: it weighs 50 lbs. Keep that in mind for its “mobility” and your van’s cargo-carrying capacity.

  • IULULU Queen Mattress, 6 Inch Memory Foam Mattress

Both lightweight and featuring great reviews, this will make a great campervan mattress for a permanent bed.

Best Mattresses That Get Stored Away

campervan mattress topper

Our mattress topper with a cover prior to adding sheets.

I use the term “mattresses” loosely in this section since what we’re really talking about are mattress toppers.

I suggest a maximum of two inches thick if you have to roll or fold your topper for storage.

  • Linenspa 2 Inch Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper

This is the mattress topper we ordered for our Roadtrek’s king sized bed.

We chose this because it can easily be removed, folded and shoved to the side, so the boys have a comfortable, safe place to sit during drives.

It’s VERY comfortable! I would like it more if it folded up smaller, but I realize that’s a tall order for any topper.

  • Lucid 2 Inch Mattress Topper

Another great topper with raving reviews that can offer a great night’s sleep in your campervan.

  • Serta ThermaGel Cooling, Pressure-Relieving Memory Foam Mattress Topper

A long-time brand that might suit you if your prefer a familiar brand. It will likely suit your needs just fine.

  • ZINUS 1.5 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress Topper

This topper will likely pack up the smallest if you believe you only need a little cushioning on your existing bed.

  • SMUG Memory Foam Mattress Topper

The reviews are solid and it weighs less than 10 lbs. It might just be a great bang for the buck if you only plan on sleeping in your van occasionally.

  • WhatsBedding 3 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper

If you’re someone who desires a really soft mattress, this might be a great solution for your campervan.

It will also pack up tightly.

Do You Need A Mattress Cover For A Mattress Topper For RV?

Our mattress topper uncovered when it was still expanding.

You don’t NEED a mattress cover, but it’s highly recommended.

It’s the best option for keeping your mattress clean with the ability to remove and wash the cover.

Regardless of your specific needs for a mattress in your campervan, do yourself a favor and get a mattress cover.

Alternative Mattress For Alternative Available Space

An option for a traditional mattress is a folding mattress if you will occasionally need to move it out of position..

  • Novilla Folding Mattress Queen

I’m basing the selection of folding mattresses on campervan fit and reviews.

  • Milliard Folding Mattress with Washable Cover

Coming in at 4″ thick and only three pounds, this is a good choice for a campervan.

There’s also a lot to be said for an included washable cover!

Perhaps you don’t have a bed platform or want to keep it simple with an air mattress.

There’s no reason that you should discount air mattresses right out of the gates.

Just make sure the air mattress isn’t too thick since your overhead space is limited in a van.

If you have plenty of overhead space, there are two good quality 13″ thick air mattresses listed.

Just keep this in mind.

There are several benefits to using an air mattress in a campervan:

  • If you need to break down the bed daily and have minimal storage for a mattress topper, you can count on an air mattress to shrink for easy storage.
  •

  • Your sleeping area might be oddly laid out, which doesn’t easily conform to a standard mattress.
  •

  • Maybe you need to sleep an additional person in the cab of the van. Specialty mattresses, such as Luno Air Mattress

Here are a few air mattress options that will work well in a campervan:

Luno air mattress

  • Luno Air Mattress

We use a Luno air mattress for our youngest son who sleeps in the cab of the van.

We placed a privacy curtain between the cab and the living area and he has his own comfortable “personal space.”

It has served us well and is such great quality that any of their mattresses will be superior if you’re okay spending the additional dough.

  •

  • INTEX Dura-Beam Standard Single-High Air Mattress

We’ve ordered other products from our pool (before we transitioned to RV life) and found them to be superior quality.

Therefore I have to list this mattress first based on previous experience.

  • INTEX Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort-Plush Luxury Air Mattress

For those of you that require a more plush air mattress, this is a good choice for both your van and guests in your home.

Unless of course your van is your home. Now that’s living!

  • King Koil Luxury Full Size Plush Pillow Top Air Mattress

If you have a high ceiling and a low bed, this might just be the most comfortable.

It has great reviews overall and will work in some campervans. Just prepare for a longer inflation time.
