What Are Some Of The Best Travel Trailers For Couples?

A few quality travel trailers stand out as great options for couples.

But let’s approach your search in a systematic manner that yields you the right travel trailer.

  1. The first step is to narrow the list to manufacturers known for good build quality.
  2.

  3. Next, focus on your camping style to determine the best type of travel trailer.
  4.

  5. Then determine the standard features necessary for your living space.
  6.

  7. Next, select the floor plan of the Manufacturer that’s right for you.
  8.

  9. Lastly, start shopping RV Trader and RV dealerships within your region for the best travel trailer for you.

Take these steps seriously and you won’t make an enormous financial mistake.

What’s Your Camping Style?

What type of camping do you and your significant other envision?

  • Full-blown glamping in a campground with a large living area, big entertainment center, and all the luxuries of a house?
  •

  • Or do you envision a rugged, lifted trailer, with large holding tanks, batteries, and solar panels designed for rough terrain and boondocking off the beaten path?

The camping vision you have makes a big difference in which manufacturer, trailer type, and amenities you shop for.

If the two of you prefer luxury with additional space for living, more storage space, a king-size bed, and a large kitchen area, a fifth wheel might be a better option.

Perhaps, you see yourself in a lightweight travel trailer that’s as agile as a small camper can be but you still desire a lot of creature comforts.

Think long and hard about all of this before getting sucked into the shopping experience and wowed by a salesperson.

Important Features For Camping Couples

There are some features I consider essential for two people in a travel trailer.

  • A small amount of personal space for each person.
  •

  • A private bedroom away from the living space.
  •

  • A queen bed or king-sized bed instead of twin beds.
  •

  • Open floor space for us to move about, exercise, and stretch without stumbling over each other.
  •

  • Plenty of storage so there’s no clutter in the living space.

If you prefer to spend most of your time outside of your travel trailer when camping, an outdoor kitchen might be a good feature.

However, I rarely saw people using their outdoor kitchens though since it’s so easy to cook inside with the door open.

If you decide to go with a really small trailer, but still desire some open space, consider a unit with a Murphy bed.

It will take some time and research and review the floorplans, specs, and features of the suitable manufacturers before you start to figure out what features accommodate your personal preferences.

Floor Plans For Best Couples Travel Trailer

You likely don’t need bunk beds if the trailer is just for the two of you.

But there are a few floor plans that will maximize your space and comfort.

A great floor plan allows for usable space that does not require you to alter it between day and night.

After you find your camping spot, level and set up the trailer, and make a meal, it’s nice to be able to climb into a comfortable queen-size bed that’s always made and ready to go.

Not clean up the dinette area and turn it into a bed.

A trailer with a rear kitchen and large windows will not only give you the largest amount of open space, but it will also appear enormous because of the windows.

The extra natural light from the large windows in a small trailer helps change the perception of “small.”

In addition, a U-shaped dinette is a great space to do work.

I like to put my feet up on one section, lean against another, and have the laptop on the table. It’s super comfortable!

Lastly, you may want to avoid a floor plan that only has a wet bath.

It can get complicated to use the toilet when the floor is wet. Just food for thought.

Does The Perfect Travel Trailer Exist?

The perfect trailer is the one that makes memories!

Oddly, we’ve yet to find the perfect trailer, or any RV for that matter.

There seems to always to one or two features that are missing from the “almost perfect camper.”

So, we’ve decided that unless you build the RV yourself, you will likely sacrifice something you want.

Some Concepts To Understand About Travel Trailers

Regardless of which manufacturer you choose, the following factors are important to understand and apply to all brands.

  1. Know and understand the dry weight, GVWR, and cargo-carrying capacity (CCC) of your trailer.
  2.

  3. Make yourself familiar with the tongue weight of the trailer, so you don’t exceed the GVWR of your tow vehicle.

Side note: most 1/2-ton trucks are not well-equipped to tow travel trailers.
  4.

  5. Not all travel trailers are equipped with the ground clearance and suspension to handle rough terrain.
  6.

  7. The better insulated your trailer, the less energy you’ll require to heat and cool your RV.

This is why I’m so adamant that travel trailers be true four-season campers.
  8.

  9. A high-quality travel trailer may cost more, but it will give you fewer problems and handle rough terrain better than a low-cost trailer.
  10.

  11. Freshwater and wastewater storage size matters more than electricity when boondocking for extended periods.
  12.

  13. If you plan to boondock a lot, make sure the trailer has an outdoor shower. Showering outside is a great way to save gray tank space.
  14.

  15. If you two are adventuresome and love having your motorized toys, consider toy haulers as an option.

Our Favorite Manufacturers For A Couples Camper

I’m only listing the RV’s that we consider high-quality travel trailers.

The intention is to offer you our honest RV reviews based on our personal experience as well as touring the trailers and listening to owner feedback.

This list is in no particular order.

We spent two years beating the poo out of our 28′ Outdoors RV travel trailer as a family of four.

The overall quality and ability to handle the terrain solidified ORV as the best camper for us.

    Pros:

    1. ORV’s are built like tanks.
    2.

    3. They are very well insulated (for a travel trailer).
    4.

    5. ORV’s have a decent cargo-carrying capacity.
    6.

    7. You’ll have more than enough freshwater stored to boondock for a long time.

    8. You will not have to modify the trailer in any way to get started boondocking in comfort.
    9.

    10. They have higher ground clearance than most other travel trailers of the same caliber.
    11.

    Cons:

    1. They’re heavy trailers with a heavy tongue weight requiring a super-duty truck.
    2.

    3. Their interior aesthetics needs updating.

A few models to consider for two people.

    • ORV Blackstone 260KVS
    •

    • ORV Blackstone 250 RDS
    •

    • ORV Creekside 21VS

  • Arctic Fox
  •

Arctic Fox was always on our radar and we had the opportunity to speak to several owners and tour a few units.

After those encounters, we still hold Arctic Fox in relatively high regard.

    Pros:

    1. Like ORV, they are well-insulated and true four-season travel trailers.
    2.

    3. We like the interior aesthetics better than ORV (purely subjective).
    4.

    5. They have a very high cargo-carrying capacity, so you don’t have to worry about what you take on your road trip.

    Cons:

    1. They too are very heavy trailers with a heavy tongue weight.
    2.

    3. The freshwater tank is a little small but still sufficient for two people.
    4.

    5. The better electrical system is an upgrade rather than a standard feature.

A few models to consider for two people.

    • Arctic Fox 25Y
    •

    • Arctic 22G (if you want a really small trailer).
    •

    • Desert Fox 24AS (if you have big toys to carry).

  • Oliver Travel Trailers

We really like the concept that Oliver Travel Trailers have embraced.

I also believe they might be the best option for couples who want great insulation, agility, and ease of maintenance.

We’d have one if they slept four comfortably.

    Pros:

    1. Oliver travel trailers are well insulated with very few opportunities to leak. That’s real peace of mind.
    2.

    3. They have an aluminum chassis and a low tongue weight for easy towing.
    4.

    5. Olliver trailers have a high cargo-carrying capacity for your gear.
    6.

    7. They’re very agile trailers and will fit into small spaces.

    Cons:

    1. Despite a high CCC, they do not have a ton of storage space.
    2.

    3. Their freshwater and waste holding tanks could be a little bigger.

A few models to consider for the two of you.

There are only two models to choose from, so check out both:

    • Oliver Legacy Elite
    •

    • Oliver Legacy Elite II

  • ATC
  •

ATC is another brand we really like for the overall quality and weight-to-size ratio.

We came close to buying one last year but held off as we realized our next chapter would require something more like a campervan for East Coast travel.

    Pros:

    1. A lightweight, but strong all-aluminum frame and chassis.
    2.

    3. Very large freshwater and waste water tanks.
    4.

    5. Since there’s no wood used in construction, there’s no potential for mold problems. That’s a big deal!
    6.

    7. They have a really high cargo-carrying capacity and plenty of storage.

    Cons:

    1. Only one con comes to mind. They could be better insulated, so you’ll expend more resources heating and cooling the trailer.

A few models that are good for couples.

    1. ATC PLĀ 700 Travel Trailer
    2.

    3. ATC PLĀ 700 Fifth Wheel (if you have toys and want to go BIG).

We came across a lot of Lance travel trailers and truck campers owners on the road and they all seemed happy with their RV.

We toured several of their truck campers and found their construction to be “middle of the road.”

But they might still be a great option for the two of you.

    Pros

    1. They have a high cargo-carrying capacity and great storage.
    2.

    3. It’s a well-established company that’s been around for a long time.
    4.

    5. Their trailers are lightweight with moderate tongue weights.

    Cons:

    1. The freshwater and wastewater tanks a too small for longer boondocking.
    2.

    3. Their website doesn’t give enough spec information to make an informed decision.

A few Lance models that may suit you two well.

  • Airstream
  •

Since Airstream changed ownership, we generally would not have considered it an option.

But they do hold their value and have (to some) a very appealing look.

    Pros:

    1. Components and build quality are above industry par.
    2.

    3. A solid reputation for good customer service.
    4.

    5. Every component installed in an Airstream must fit through the door, making modifications easy.
    6.

    7. They trailers are lightweight.

    Cons:

    1. A high price for some of the downfalls listed below.
    2.

    3. Freshwater and wastewater holding tanks are too small.
    4.

    5. The cargo-carrying capacity is too low.
    6.

    7. They could be better insulated.
    8.

    9. Airstream’s ground clearance is not high enough to get into more remote areas.

A few Airstream models that are good for two people.

    • Airstream Bambi (small and agile)
    •

    • Airstream Flying Cloud

  • Grand Design

I was hesitant about including Grand Design on the list since we’ve crossed paths with many unhappy owners.

To be fair, there were also a few happy owners.

But Grand Design comes in at a price point that may be a little more realistic for some couples.

    Pros:

    1. The smaller Grand Design Trailers are lightweight.
    2.

    3. They’re fairly well insulated. But they could use better quality insulation.
    4.

    5. There’s a well-established network of service centers.
    6.

    7. Grand Design has a huge community of owners and support networks.

    Cons:

    1. The freshwater and wastewater holding tanks are too small in my opinion.
    2.

    3. A history of more repairs throughout ownership. Albeit, less than some of the other less expensive brands.
    4.

    5. Many of the features that are standard in the other units are premium add-ons for Grand Design.

Several Grand Designs that may appeal to you and your significant other.

Not everyone wants to boondock just some of the time.

For those of us who want to get further off the beaten path with all the amenities, Black Series will solve that need.

Heads up, we’ve heard mixed reviews from owners if that holds any value.

    Pros:

    1. Decent amount of freshwater and wastewater capacity.
    2.

    3. High ground clearance.
    4.

    5. They’re built on an aluminum frame, making them strong and lightweight.
    6.

    7. Independant suspension designed for rough terrain. Read that as less destruction of your trailer on washboard roads.
    8.

    9. Black Series are semi-well insulated.
    10.

    11. Boondocking ready out of the box.

    Cons:

    1. They’re harder to come by and expensive.
    2.

    3. There’s a small network of service centers.

A few Black Series Trailers that may be to your liking.
